Questions & Answers about این کتاب سی و پنج تومان است.
Why is there an "and" (و) right in the middle of the number 35?
In Farsi, compound numbers from 21 to 99 are formed by putting the tens word first, followed by the word و (meaning "and"), and then the units word. So سی و پنج literally translates to "thirty and five".
How do you pronounce the و in سی و پنج?
Although the word for "and" can be pronounced "va" in very formal situations, in numbers and everyday speech it is pronounced as a short "o". So this number is spoken as "si-o-panj".
Why doesn't the word تومان get a plural ending since there are 35 of them?
A super important rule in Farsi is that nouns following a number are always kept in the singular form. Even though we say the plural "tomans" in English, Farsi simply uses the singular تومان.
I thought the currency of Iran was the Rial. What is a تومان?
تومان (toman) is the currency unit Iranians actually use in daily conversation and on most price tags. One تومان is equal to 10 Rials. When buying everyday items like a book, prices are almost always given in tomans.
