Questions & Answers about سرم بزرگ است و چشمم سیاه است.
Where is the word for "my" in this sentence?
Instead of using a separate word for "my", Farsi usually attaches a short ending to the noun. Here, the ending -am is added. You can see it attached to sar (head) to make saram (my head), and attached to cheshm (eye) to make cheshmam (my eye).
The translation says "my eyes," but doesn't cheshm mean just one eye?
Yes, exactly! In Farsi, paired body parts (like eyes, hands, or ears) are often written in the singular form when describing them generally. So cheshmam literally means "my eye", but it is the most natural way to say "my eyes" in this context.
How does the spelling change when adding the -am ending?
Because sar (سر) and cheshm (چشم) both end in consonants, you simply attach the letter م (m) to the end of the word. Since the last letters of those words can connect to the left, the م connects directly to them, creating سرم and چشمم.
Why do we use ast twice?
This sentence is made of two complete, independent thoughts joined by و (and). Just like in English ("My head is large and my eyes are black"), each part needs its own verb. Remember that in Farsi, the verb ast (is) always goes at the very end of its phrase.
