شهر بزرگ امروز شلوغ نیست.

Questions & Answers about شهر بزرگ امروز شلوغ نیست.

Where is the Ezafe particle in شهر بزرگ, and why don't we see it?
The Ezafe links شهر (city) and بزرگ (big) to make شهر بزرگ (shahr-e bozorg). It is pronounced as a short e sound at the end of شهر. Because short vowels are almost never written in standard Farsi script, you won't see a letter for it. You simply add the sound when speaking because you know a noun is being followed by an adjective!
Why is the word order شهر بزرگ instead of the other way around?
In English, we put the adjective before the noun (big city). Farsi does the exact opposite: the noun always comes first, followed by its adjective. The hidden Ezafe particle acts as the bridge connecting them, so you are essentially saying city-of big.
Why does امروز (today) come in the middle of the sentence instead of at the end?
In Farsi, time words like امروز usually sit right after the subject of the sentence. The complete subject here is شهر بزرگ (the big city). Because Farsi is a language that puts its verbs at the very end, the verb نیست (is not) claims that final spot, pushing the time word into the middle.
Is نیست a completely different word from است (is)?
نیست (nist) is simply the negative form of است (ast). In Farsi, you make verbs negative by adding an n sound to the beginning. Over time, that negative prefix combined with the verb to be to create the single, smooth word نیست, meaning is not.
