The Present Passive Voice
In Persian, the passive voice is used when the focus is on the action or the receiver of the action, rather than who is performing it—like saying "the beans are picked" instead of "the farmers pick the beans."
To form the present passive voice for simple verbs, combine the past participle of the main verb with the present tense of شدن (to become).
The past participle is simply the past stem of the verb plus an ـه (e). Because passive subjects are usually the things receiving the action, you will most often use the third-person singular (میشود / mi-shavad) or plural (میشوند / mi-shavand).
| First, the beans are picked from the farm. | اول دانهها از مزرعه چیده میشوند.avval dâne-hâ az mazrae chide mishavand. |
| The coffee is poured into the bags. | قهوه در کیسهها ریخته میشود.ghahve dar kise-hâ rikhte mishavad. |
| The coffee beans are washed with cold water. | دانههای قهوه با آب سرد شسته میشوند.dâne-hâ-ye ghahve bâ âb sard shoste mishavand. |
Compound Verbs in the Passive
Forming the passive for compound verbs that use کردن (to do/make) is even simpler. Instead of creating a past participle, you just replace کردن with شدن.
| to mix | مخلوط کردنmakhlut kardan |
| The coffee is mixed with sugar. | قهوه با شکر مخلوط میشود.qahve bâ shekar makhlut mishavad |
You then conjugate the شدن portion to match whether the subject is singular or plural.
| These beans are separated. | این دانهها جدا میشوند.in dâne-hâ jodâ mishavand. |
| At this temperature, the beans are roasted very fast. | در این دما، دانهها خیلی سریع برشته میشوند.dar in damâ, dâne-hâ kheyli sari' bereshte mishavand. |
| After the coffee is ground, it is consumed. | بعد از اینکه قهوه آسیاب میشود، مصرف میشود.ba'd az inke qahve âsyâb mishavad, masraf mishavad. |
