Reporting Yes/No Questions
To report a yes or no question indirectly—such as "I asked if he could help me"—Farsi uses the verb پرسیدن (to ask) combined with که آیا.
Here, که (that) and the question word آیا work together to mean "if" or "whether". Remember that in Farsi, you ask from someone using the preposition از.
The full structure is: از + [person] + پرسیدن + که آیا + [reported clause]
| I asked the support operator if he could help me. | من از اپراتور پشتیبانی پرسیدم که آیا میتواند به من کمک کند.man az operâtor poshtibâni porsidam ke âyâ mitavânad be man komak konad. |
The tense or mood of the verb in the reported clause matches the original question. If the original question used the subjunctive (like asking about ability or wanting), the reported clause uses the subjunctive. If the original question was about a fact, use the indicative.
| The customer asked us if a refund was possible after activating the account. | مشتری از ما پرسید که آیا بعد از فعال کردن حساب، بازپرداخت ممکن است.moshtari az mâ porsid ke âyâ ba'd az fa'âl kardan hesâb, bâzpardâkht momken ast. |
If the person being asked is obvious from the context, you can drop the از phrase entirely.
| He asked if I wanted to upgrade this subscription. | او پرسید که آیا میخواهم این اشتراک را ارتقا دهم.u porsid ke âyâ mikhâham in eshterâk râ erteghâ daham. |
This exact same structure works for reporting past actions as well. The verb in the reported clause simply keeps the tense of the original question.
| My colleague asked if I sent the survey form to the customer. | همکارم پرسید که آیا فرم نظرسنجی را برای مشتری فرستادم.hamkâram porsid ke âyâ forme nazarsanji râ barâye moshtari ferestâdam. |
