Regular Plurals with ها
In Farsi, making a noun plural is straightforward. Simply add the suffix ها to the end of the word. This is the standard plural marker and can be used for almost any noun.
| pencil | مدادmedâd |
| The pencils are on the table. | مدادها روی میز است.medâdhâ ruye miz ast. |
Notice how the basic structure of the sentence stays the same when talking about multiple items:
| These boards are big. | این تختهها بزرگ است.in takhte-hâ bozorg ast. |
Joining the Suffix
In Farsi script, depending on the final letter of the noun, ها might physically connect to the word or sit right next to it. You do not need to change the original spelling of the noun—just add ها to the end.
| The pictures are on the walls. | عکسها روی دیوارها است.aks-hâ ruye divâr-hâ ast. |
| These files are organized. | این پروندهها منظم است.in parvande-hâ monazzam ast. |
Plural Objects and Singular Verbs
When a plural subject is an inanimate object (like computers, papers, or walls), Farsi typically uses a singular verb (like است or نیست).
| The computers are inside the classroom. | کامپیوترها داخل کلاس است.kâmpyuterhâ dâkhel kelâs ast. |
| Those computers are not working. | آن کامپیوترها سالم نیست.ân kâmpyuterhâ sâlem nist. |
Using a singular verb for plural objects is extremely common and natural. However, using a plural verb is also correct:
| Are the boards on the wall? | آیا تختهها روی دیوار هستند؟âyâ takhte-hâ ruye divâr hastand? |
