Questions & Answers about آیا تختهها روی دیوار هستند؟
How is the plural marker added to تخته (takhte) since it ends in a silent letter?
The word تخته (board) ends in a silent 'e' sound, written with the Persian letter heh (ه). To make it plural, we just write the regular plural marker ها right next to it: تختهها (takhte-hâ). You do not drop the final letter of the word.
Since تختهها (boards) are objects and not people, why does the sentence use the plural verb هستند (hastand) instead of the singular است (ast)?
In Farsi, plural inanimate objects (things that are not alive) usually take a singular verb in everyday speech. However, using the plural verb هستند is also perfectly correct and often sounds a bit more formal or written. Both are acceptable!
How do we connect the word روی (on) to دیوار (wall)?
We use the invisible connecting sound called the ezâfe. You pronounce it as 'ruy-e divâr'. Because روی already ends in a vowel-like sound, the ezâfe is not written out as an extra letter here, but you still must say that short 'e' sound to link the two words.
Do I always need to start yes/no questions with آیا (âyâ)?
No! آیا is just a helpful marker for formal or written Farsi to let you know a question is coming. In spoken Farsi, you can just drop it entirely and say تختهها روی دیوار هستند؟ while raising the pitch of your voice at the end.
