No Matter How Much
When talking about pushing your limits, you often need to express that an outcome will happen regardless of a condition's intensity. To say "no matter how much," use هر قدر هم که.
Because this phrase introduces an indefinite or hypothetical degree, the verb in its clause must always be in the Present Subjunctive.
| no matter how much | هر قدر هم کهhar qadr ham ke |
Notice how the verb in the "no matter how much" clause takes the subjunctive form, while the main action remains in the indicative.
| No matter how exhausting the marathon is, I want to reach the finish line. | هر قدر هم که ماراتن خستهکننده باشد، میخواهم به خط پایان برسم.har qadr ham ke mârâton khaste-konande bâshad, mikhâham be khat pâyân beresam. |
Pushing Past the Pain
In endurance sports, athletes must deal with physical hurdles and the temptation to quit. To express "to give up" or "to quit," use the compound verb دست کشیدن.
| No matter how many muscle cramps I have, I will not give up on the race. | هر قدر هم که گرفتگی عضله داشته باشم، از مسابقه دست نمیکشم.har qadr ham ke gereftegi-ye azole dâshte bâsham, az mosâbeqe dast nemikesham. |
To describe conquering these mental and physical barriers, Farsi uses the compound verb غلبه کردن (to overcome). This verb pairs with the preposition بر (on/upon), placed directly before the obstacle.
| No matter how much mental fatigue he feels, he wants to overcome the pain. | هر قدر هم که خستگی ذهنی احساس کند، میخواهد بر درد غلبه کند.har qadr ham ke khastegi-ye zehni ehsâs konad, mikhâhad bar dard ghalabe konad. |
Sentence Placement and Focus
The هر قدر هم که clause is flexible. It can open the sentence to set the scene, or sit directly after the subject of the main clause to emphasize their unwavering persistence.
| One of the best runners does not want to give up, no matter how much he sweats. | یکی از بهترین دوندهها، هر قدر هم که عرق کند، نمیخواهد دست بکشد.yeki az behtarin davande-hâ, har ghadr ham ke araq konad, nemikhâhad dast bekeshad. |
Whether you are talking about the overarching distance or the pain of every single step (گام), the rule remains the same: the condition takes the subjunctive.
| In a marathon, no matter how painful each step is, mental readiness is important. | در ماراتن، هر قدر هم که هر گام دردناک باشد، آمادگی ذهنی مهم است.dar mârâton, har qadr ham ke har gâm dardnâk bâshad, âmâdegi zehni mohem ast. |
| In one of the hardest marathons, no matter how long the route is, you can overcome it. | در یکی از سختترین ماراتنها، هر قدر هم که مسیر طولانی باشد، میتوانی بر آن غلبه کنی.dar yeki az sakht-tarin mârâton-hâ, har qadar ham ke masir tulâni bâshad, mitavâni bar ân ghalabe koni. |
