The little word هم (also, too) has been with you since the very beginning — من هم ایرانیام. It has one rule that English "too" hides: هم stands directly after the word it highlights.
After the Subject
When the new information is who, هم follows the subject:
| I want tea too. (I do too) | من هم چای میخواهم.man ham chây mikhâham. |
| He is going to the park too. | او هم به پارک میرود.u ham be pârk miravad. |
| My brother also reads Persian. | برادر من هم فارسی میخواند.barâdar-e man ham fârsi mikhânad. |
Moving هم Moves the Meaning
Persian shows with word order what English shows with stress. Compare:
| Persian | Meaning |
|---|---|
| من هم چای میخواهم | I too want tea (like you) |
| من چای هم میخواهم | I want tea too (besides the coffee) |
| I want tea too. (tea as well) | من چای هم میخواهم.man chây ham mikhâham. |
| We have apples too. (we do too) | ما هم سیب داریم.mâ ham sib dârim. |
| We have apples too. (apples as well) | ما سیب هم داریم.mâ sib ham dârim. |
After Time Words
The same rule covers times and places — هم right after the highlighted word:
| Today too, I am reading a book. | امروز هم کتاب میخوانم.emruz ham ketâb mikhânam. |
