Formal change of state verbs (yâftan)

The Formal Verb یافتن

In formal Farsi, the verb یافتن means "to find" or "to obtain."

Forming Inchoative Verbs

More commonly, یافتن serves as a "light verb" combined with a noun to form a compound verb. These combinations create inchoative verbs—verbs that describe a transition, a change of state, or a process of becoming.

They are highly frequent in news, science, and economics to describe shifts like expanding, decreasing, or developing. To use these verbs across different tenses, conjugate only یافتن. Its past stem is یافت and its present stem is یاب.

Present vs. Subjunctive

The present indicative is formed with the prefix می (e.g., می‌یابد). When a sentence requires the subjunctive, these compound verbs typically drop the standard ب prefix, leaving just the stem and the personal ending (e.g., یابد).

Notice the contrast between the indicative and subjunctive forms in the examples below:

Broad Applications

This structure is extremely versatile. You will see it used for everything from biological evolution to reaching the end of an event.

Some verbs in this family require a specific preposition. For example, دست یافتن (to achieve) always pairs with the preposition به to indicate what is being attained.
