Formal abstract nouns (-iyyat)

In Farsi, you can elevate adjectives and base nouns into formal abstract concepts using the suffix ـیت. Borrowed from Arabic, it functions like the English suffixes "-ity", "-ness", or "-hood".

Qualities and States

Adding ـیت expresses a state or quality, turning simple concepts like "transparent" or "popular" into abstract nouns like "transparency" and "popularity".

Civic Identity

This suffix is essential for discussing society and demographics. By attaching it to words for "nation" or "tribe", Farsi creates the abstract categories used to talk about identity and belonging.

Law and Governance

In formal, legal, and political contexts, ـیت is heavily used to define authority, legality, and status. These abstract nouns can form complex ideas like "the rule of law" or formal verbs like به رسمیت شناختن (to officially recognize).

Mankind vs. Humaneness

English uses "humanity" for both the human species and the moral quality of compassion, but Farsi distinguishes between the two. بشریت refers to humankind, while انسانیت means humaneness or moral character.

This same suffix is also used to describe broad societal conditions, such as the state of lacking basic needs or rights:
