Adjectives of possession (-mand, -dâr)

To express interest in something, use the noun علاقه (interest) with the preposition به (to/in) and the verb داشتن (to have).

Adjectives of Possession: -دار and -مند

You can turn nouns into adjectives meaning "possessing" or "endowed with" by attaching a suffix. Two of the most common are -دار and -مند.

The Suffix -دار This comes from the present stem of داشتن (to have). It implies possessing or holding the base noun.

  • پول (money) → پولدار (rich)

The Suffix -مند This is frequently attached to abstract nouns to describe being endowed with a quality, capability, or state of mind.

  • علاقه (interest) → علاقه‌مند (interested)

Like the noun form, the adjective علاقه‌مند takes the preposition به.

Describing People and Traits

These suffixes are highly productive for creating adjectives about people, their lifestyles, and character traits. For example, a homemaker is "home-having" (خانه‌دار), and a discrete person is a "secret-keeper" (رازدار).

Describing Objects and Concepts

These suffixes are also used to describe objects, methods, and professional qualities. A flavored drink has taste (طعم‌دار), a problematic situation has issues (مشکل‌دار), and a capable person is endowed with power (توانمند).
