Questions & Answers about Toen ik destijds verhuisde, huilde mijn zus.
Why do we use toen here instead of als to mean "when"?
In Dutch, toen is used for a single, specific event that happened in the past. If you used als, it would mean "whenever", turning this into a repeated past habit. Because moving in this context is a one-time past event, toen is strictly required.
What does destijds mean, and why is it used here?
Destijds translates to "back then" or "at the time." It puts extra emphasis on the fact that this happened during a specific historical period in the speaker's past, which pairs naturally with the one-time past trigger toen.
Why is the word order huilde mijn zus instead of mijn zus huilde?
The sentence starts with the subordinate clause Toen ik destijds verhuisde. In Dutch, this entire clause acts as the first block of information in the main sentence. The conjugated main verb (huilde) must immediately follow it to maintain the V2 (verb-second) rule, pushing the subject (mijn zus) after the verb.
Why is the past tense of verhuizen spelled with an s but ends in -de?
