Questions & Answers about Je moet de envelop aan de ontvanger adresseren.
Why do we use aan here instead of naar, since the letter goes to the recipient?
You use aan because you are identifying the receiver of the action, similar to giving something to someone. You address an envelope aan (to) someone, but you physically send the letter naar (to) them or their location. Aan focuses on the intended recipient, while naar focuses on the direction of physical movement.
Could I change the word order to Je moet de envelop adresseren aan de ontvanger?
Yes, you can! Because aan de ontvanger is a prepositional phrase, it is allowed to break the standard rule and go after the final infinitive verb (adresseren). Placing a prepositional phrase at the very end is very common in Dutch to make sentences flow more naturally or to place emphasis on that specific phrase.
Is envelop always spelled without a final 'e' in Dutch?
Yes, in modern standard Dutch, it is spelled envelop. While it comes from French, the Dutch spelling dropped the final 'e'. You might occasionally see the older spelling enveloppe, but envelop is the official preferred spelling. The plural is enveloppen.
Why does the Dutch verb adresseren only have one 'd', unlike the English word 'address'?
Dutch spelling rules often simplify double consonants in loanwords if they aren't needed for pronunciation. Since the 'a' at the beginning is an unstressed, open syllable, a single 'd' is enough. However, notice that it keeps the double 's' to ensure the preceding 'e' is pronounced as a short vowel.
