Questions & Answers about De vijand grijpt me bij de enkel.
Why does this sentence use de enkel instead of mijn enkel?
This is a classic example of the possessive shift. Instead of saying "The enemy grabs by my ankle" (bij mijn enkel), Dutch uses an object pronoun to show who is affected (me) and a definite article for the body part (de enkel). English does this too in this specific phrase ("grabs me by the ankle"), but Dutch uses this structure across a much wider variety of actions involving body parts, such as washing or brushing.
Why is the preposition bij used here?
In Dutch, bij is the standard preposition used with verbs of seizing, grabbing, or holding when referring to a specific body part or piece of clothing. Just like in English ("by the ankle"), bij indicates the specific point of contact.
Could I use the stressed pronoun mij instead of me in this sentence?
You could, but it changes the focus. Using mij (De vijand grijpt mij...) places heavy emphasis on the fact that the enemy grabbed you specifically, rather than someone else. In most contexts, the unstressed me sounds much more natural because the identity of the person isn't the main point of contrast.
