Questions & Answers about De Amazone is breed en stroomt door het bos.
Why do we use the article de before Amazone?
In Dutch, names of rivers almost always take the definite article de. While you usually drop the article for countries or cities (unless they are plural, like de Verenigde Staten), rivers like de Amazone, de Rijn, and de Maas require one.
How do we determine the verb agreement for a geographical proper noun like de Amazone?
You look at whether the name itself is grammatically singular or plural. Because de Amazone is a singular noun, it takes singular verbs (is and stroomt). You only use plural verbs for geographical names that are inherently plural, such as mountain ranges (de Andes) or island groups (de Bahama's).
Would a Dutch speaker really call the Amazon rainforest het bos instead of a jungle?
Yes, it is very common in everyday Dutch to refer to any large forested area, including tropical rainforests, simply as het bos. If you want to be scientifically or geographically precise, you can use het regenwoud (the rainforest) or het oerwoud (the jungle/primeval forest), but het bos is perfectly natural here.
Since en connects two clauses, why isn't the subject repeated before stroomt?
Just like in English, if two main clauses connected by en share the exact same subject (de Amazone), you can leave the subject out of the second clause. Because en is a coordinating conjunction, it doesn't change the underlying word order, so the verb stroomt simply acts as if the subject were right in front of it.
