Questions & Answers about Die pen schrijft overal soepel op.
Why is the pen the subject of schrijft if a person is the one actually doing the writing?
This is called the facilitative middle voice. Just like in English, you can use an active verb (schrijft) with an adverb of manner (soepel) to describe how an object undergoes an action. It simply means the pen is easy and pleasant to write with.
Why does this sentence use overal op instead of op alles for "on everything"?
When a preposition like op points to "everything", Dutch replaces the word "alles" with overal to create a pronominal adverb. Saying op alles sounds clunky and unnatural to native speakers, so it becomes overal op (literally "everywhere on").
Why is the word soepel placed between overal and op?
Pronominal adverbs like overal op are highly separable. In Dutch sentence structure, it is standard to split them and place other adverbs—like the adverb of manner soepel—right in the middle.
What exactly does soepel mean here?
Literally, soepel means "flexible" or "supple". When applied to tools, machines, or a process, it translates to "smoothly", meaning it works easily and without friction or resistance.
