The middle voice (ligt lekker, rijdt soepel)

Objects Doing the Action

In English, we sometimes say that a car "drives smoothly" or a pen "writes well." Dutch takes this concept even further. You can describe how an object naturally handles, feels, or performs by making it the subject of an active verb.

This is known as the facilitive middle voice. To use it, simply pair the object and its active verb with an adverb of manner—such as soepel (smoothly), prettig (pleasantly), or stroef (stiffly)—to describe the user's experience.

This car drives very smoothly.
Deze auto rijdt erg soepel.
That new keyboard types very pleasantly.
Dat nieuwe toetsenbord typt heel prettig.
These scissors cut very stiffly.
Deze schaar knipt erg stroef.

Going Down Easily with weg-

To emphasize that a book, television show, or beverage is effortlessly enjoyable, Dutch pairs standard verbs with the prefix weg- (away).

Verbs like weglezen (to read easily), wegkijken (to watch easily), and wegdrinken (to go down easily) imply that the object practically consumes itself because it is so pleasant. Keep in mind that these are separable verbs, meaning weg often splits off and moves to the end of the clause.

This book reads very quickly.
Dit boek leest heel vlot weg.
This novel reads quickly, but that series is also easy to watch.
Deze roman leest vlot weg, maar die serie kijkt ook makkelijk weg.
This cold wine goes down wonderfully on the terrace.
Deze koude wijn drinkt heerlijk weg op het terras.

Spreading it Out with uitsmeren

You will frequently encounter this grammar structure when discussing skincare products, paints, or spreads. By using the separable verb uitsmeren (to spread), you can describe exactly how a cream or lotion applies to the skin.

The new sunscreen spreads very easily.
De nieuwe zonnebrand smeert heel makkelijk uit.
If this cream spreads stiffly, then I will not use it.
Smeert deze crème stroef uit, dan gebruik ik hem niet.

Everyday Usability

This construction is incredibly common in Dutch for all sorts of everyday tools and objects. Whether you are talking about a broom sweeping or a bed sleeping, just use the active verb plus an adverb to describe how it performs.

This broom sweeps really nicely.
Deze bezem veegt echt fijn.
That pen writes smoothly on everything.
Die pen schrijft overal soepel op.
