Questions & Answers about Wij bekijken de grafiek voor de analyse.
Why do we use bekijken here instead of kijken naar?
The prefix be- turns the intransitive verb kijken (which requires the preposition naar to connect to an object) into the transitive verb bekijken (which takes a direct object). By using bekijken, we can attach de grafiek directly to the verb without needing a preposition at all.
Does bekijken mean exactly the same thing as kijken naar?
They are closely related, but bekijken carries a stronger nuance of studying, examining, or assessing something. While kijken naar de grafiek could just mean physically pointing your eyes at the chart, bekijken implies you are actively trying to understand the data, which makes perfect sense when doing an analyse.
Is grafiek a false friend? Can it refer to a computer graphic or an illustration?
Yes, it is a false friend! In Dutch, de grafiek strictly means a graph, chart, or diagram used to present data (like a line graph or pie chart). If you want to talk about graphics in a video game or a digital illustration, you would use the English loanword de graphics or a word like de afbeelding.
If I want to say we examine the chart "closely" (nauwkeurig), where would that adverb go in this sentence?
