Questions & Answers about Haar bondgenoot komt morgen over uit Nederland.
The verb here is separated into komt and over. What does overkomen mean when it is separable?
When overkomen is separable (with the stress on over), it literally means to "come over" or travel from one place to another. If it were inseparable (stress on komen), the meaning shifts entirely to "to happen to" or "befall", as in Wat overkomt hem? (What is happening to him?).
How would this sentence look in the present perfect tense (Her ally has come over)?
Because it is a separable verb, the past participle gets -ge- wedged in the middle: overgekomen. Also, because it expresses a change of location, it takes zijn instead of hebben. The sentence (without tomorrow) becomes: Haar bondgenoot is uit Nederland overgekomen. Note that the inseparable version forms its past participle without -ge-: overkomen.
What makes up the word bondgenoot?
It is a compound of bond (alliance, union, or league) and genoot (companion or partner). So a bondgenoot is literally an alliance-partner, or an "ally". You will see genoot in other words too, like echtgenoot (spouse) and huisgenoot (housemate).
Why does the sentence use uit Nederland instead of van Nederland for "from"?
