Questions & Answers about Het laatje ligt op de kleine schaal.
Why does laatje have a double 'aa' when the base word is just la?
The base noun for "drawer" is la, which ends in a single, long 'a' sound. When we add the diminutive ending -tje, the syllable is suddenly closed off by consonants. To keep the vowel sounding long, we have to double it to aa. That is why la becomes laatje.
If "drawer" is de la, why does the sentence start with Het laatje?
No matter the original gender of a noun, all diminutives in Dutch automatically become het words. So even though it's de la, it becomes het laatje.
Why does the sentence use ligt instead of just saying the drawer is on the dish?
Dutch speakers strongly prefer using position verbs (liggen, staan, zitten) instead of zijn (to be) to describe where objects are located. Because a drawer rests flat and horizontally on its bottom, we use liggen (to lie).
Why does kleine have an -e added to the end?
Schaal is a de word (de schaal). When an adjective is placed directly before a de word, it gets an -e ending. The only time you drop the -e is when the adjective is in front of an indefinite het word (like een klein laatje).
