Questions & Answers about Het konijn overleeft de operatie wel. De dierenarts is namelijk uitstekend.
Why use namelijk here instead of combining the sentences with want or omdat?
You absolutely could use want or omdat! Using namelijk is just a stylistic choice. Instead of making one long sentence with a conjunction ("because"), namelijk lets you start a fresh main clause while still giving the reason for the previous statement. It translates well to adding ", you see" in English.
Could I start the second sentence with namelijk?
No. When namelijk is used to give a reason for a previous statement, it cannot be put in the very first position. It belongs in the "middle field" of the sentence, meaning it usually comes right after the conjugated verb (in this case, is).
What purpose does wel serve in the first sentence?
It acts as a modal particle to add reassurance. While Het konijn overleeft de operatie is just a neutral statement of fact, adding wel gives it an encouraging tone, similar to saying "The rabbit will survive, don't worry" or "The rabbit will make it."
Why use the present tense overleeft when the English translation says "will survive"?
Dutch frequently uses the present tense for future events, especially when expressing a strong certainty that something will happen. You don't need to add the future auxiliary verb zal (will) here.
