Questions & Answers about Daarnaast krijgt u een exclusief cadeau.
Why is the verb order krijgt u instead of u krijgt?
Because the sentence starts with the connector Daarnaast. In Dutch, the main verb must always take the second position in a main clause. Since Daarnaast is in position one, the verb krijgt comes immediately after it, pushing the subject u to the third position.
Where does the word Daarnaast come from?
It is made by combining daar (there) and naast (next to). Literally meaning next to that, it is a very common way to say additionally or besides that in Dutch.
Why doesn't the adjective exclusief get an -e ending here?
Because cadeau is a het-word (het cadeau). When a singular het-word follows the word een (a/an), the adjective before it drops the usual -e ending. If we used a de-word instead, it would get the -e ending.
Why does krijgt keep its -t ending even though the subject comes after the verb?
The formal pronoun u always keeps the -t ending on the verb, even when the subject and verb swap places. If this sentence used the informal you, the -t would be dropped: Daarnaast krijg je een exclusief cadeau.
