Questions & Answers about Ik onderteken dezelfde overeenkomst, mits zij aan de voorwaarde voldoen.
How does mits affect the word order in the second half of the sentence?
Mits (provided that) is a subordinating conjunction. This means it introduces a dependent clause and pushes the conjugated verb to the very end of that clause. That is why the verb voldoen is pushed all the way to the end, after aan de voorwaarde.
Is the verb ondertekenen (to sign) separable? Why isn't it ik teken onder?
It is inseparable! While many Dutch verbs that start with prepositions are separable, ondertekenen is an exception. The prefix onder- stays firmly attached to the verb, so you just conjugate the end of it: ik onderteken. (A good hint is pronunciation: the stress falls on the te, not the on, which tells you it doesn't separate).
Why do we use the preposition aan before de voorwaarde?
In Dutch, "to meet a condition" or "to satisfy a requirement" is expressed with the fixed verb-preposition combination voldoen aan. Even though English doesn't use a preposition here ("meet the condition"), you always need aan in Dutch.
How do I know whether to use dezelfde or hetzelfde for "the same agreement"?
It depends on whether the noun is a de-word or a het-word. The word for agreement is de overeenkomst (a handy trick: almost all nouns ending in -komst are de-words). Because it is a de-word, you must use dezelfde.
