Questions & Answers about Dit is niet het goede moment.
Why is it Dit and not Deze at the start of the sentence?
The word moment is a het word (het moment). When you want to say 'this' for a het word, you always use dit. You only use deze for de words.
Why do we use niet instead of geen to say 'not'?
You use geen to negate a noun that has een (a/an) or no article at all. Here, we are talking about a specific, definite thing: het goede moment (the right moment). To negate a definite noun, you must use niet.
Why does goed have an extra -e at the end (goede)?
In Dutch, adjectives placed before a noun usually get an -e at the end. The only time you do not add the -e is when you have a het word preceded by een (a) or no article. Since we are using the definite article het (the) here, goed becomes goede.
Doesn't goed usually mean 'good'? Why is it translated as 'right' here?
Yes, goed means 'good', but in Dutch it is also commonly used to mean 'right' or 'correct'. You could also say Dit is niet het juiste moment, using the word juist (correct/right). Both are completely natural!
