Questions & Answers about Eigenlijk wil ik naar huis.
Why is it wil ik instead of ik wil?
In Dutch, the verb must be the second piece of information in the sentence. Because this sentence starts with the word Eigenlijk (actually), the subject (ik) has to swap places with the verb (wil) to keep the verb in that second spot.
The translation says 'want to go', but I don't see the Dutch word for 'go' (gaan). Where is it?
In Dutch, when you use a verb like willen (to want) along with a destination like naar huis, you can just leave out the verb of motion. The action of going is naturally understood without needing to actually say gaan.
In English we just say 'go home', but the Dutch sentence says naar huis. Do I always need naar?
Yes! When you are talking about moving toward your house, you must use naar (to). You always say naar huis for 'going home'. If you want to say you are already inside your home, you use the single word thuis instead.
How is the word Eigenlijk used here?
Eigenlijk means 'actually', 'really', or 'in fact'. It is a very common word in spoken Dutch, often used to soften a statement or show a slight change of mind, exactly like 'actually' does in English.
