De bank heeft het saldo veranderd.

Questions & Answers about De bank heeft het saldo veranderd.

Why doesn't the past participle veranderd start with ge-?
The verb veranderen (to change) starts with the unstressed prefix ver-. In Dutch, verbs that begin with inseparable prefixes like be-, ge-, ont-, or ver- do not get an extra ge- at the beginning of their past participle. So it simply becomes veranderd, not geveranderd.
How do we know to end veranderd with a -d instead of a -t?
We look at the stem of the verb to apply the 't kofschip rule. The stem of veranderen is verander. Because the final letter of this stem is r, which is not one of the voiceless consonants in 't kofschip, the past participle takes a -d ending.
Why is it het saldo? Aren't most Dutch words ending in '-o' de words?
While many everyday words ending in '-o' do take de (like de auto or de radio), het saldo (the balance) is an exception. It is a great specific detail to memorize when you are learning banking and financial vocabulary!
Why is veranderd placed at the very end of the sentence?
This is a standard rule for the present perfect tense in Dutch. The helping verb (here, heeft) stays in the second position of the sentence, and the past participle (veranderd) gets pushed all the way to the end of the clause.
