Questions & Answers about In dit proces wordt het staal gesneden.
Why does the Dutch sentence use wordt (becomes) instead of is to say "is cut"?
In Dutch, the present passive voice uses the auxiliary verb worden. You can think of it as "the steel is being cut" or "is getting cut". If you used the verb zijn (is gesneden), it would change the meaning to a completed action: "the steel has been cut".
Why are the verb and subject swapped around as wordt het staal instead of het staal wordt?
Because the sentence starts with the phrase In dit proces. In a normal Dutch main clause, the conjugated verb must sit in the second position. When you put something other than the subject at the very beginning, the subject has to move behind the verb. This is called inversion.
How do I know to use dit proces instead of deze proces?
Proces is a neuter noun, which means it takes the article het (het proces). For all het-words, you must use dit to say "this" and dat to say "that". You only use deze and die for de-words.
What is the infinitive verb form for gesneden?
It comes from the verb snijden (to cut). Because it is an irregular verb, the past participle is gesneden. Notice how it gets pushed to the very end of the sentence, which is the standard rule for past participles in Dutch.
