What is the original word for beste?
The base word is goed (good). Just like in English, its comparison forms are completely irregular: goed (good), beter (better), and best (best).
Why does beste have an -e at the end instead of just being best?
When an adjective is placed directly before a noun (like optie) and follows a word like de or het, it usually gets an -e added to the end. Since it is de optie, we write de beste optie.
Why doesn't laag get an -e ending like beste does?
Adjectives only get an -e ending when they are placed directly before the noun they describe. Here, laag comes after the verb is. When an adjective is used later in the sentence like this, it never gets an extra -e.
Why is the word order normal after want? Doesn't "because" push the verb to the end?
Dutch has two words for "because": want and omdat. Want simply links two normal sentences together without changing the word order. If the sentence had used omdat, the verb would indeed have been pushed to the end: ...omdat de prijs laag is.
