Questions & Answers about Jullie zullen waarschijnlijk laat aankomen.
Why is it zullen here instead of zal?
Zullen is the plural form of the auxiliary verb for the future tense. Because the subject is jullie (you, plural), we must use the plural form. If the subject was singular, like jij or hij, it would be zal.
Why is the verb aankomen at the very end of the sentence?
When you use an auxiliary (helper) verb like zullen, it takes the second position in the sentence. The main action verb (aankomen) gets pushed all the way to the end in its full dictionary form (the infinitive).
Aankomen is a separable verb. Why isn't it split up here?
You normally split a separable verb when it is the active, conjugated verb in a sentence. However, because the helper verb zullen is doing the active work here, aankomen stays together in its complete, unsplit infinitive form at the end of the sentence.
Could I put waarschijnlijk or laat at the very end of the sentence?
No, the infinitive verb (aankomen) must be the very last word in this sentence structure. Adverbs that describe how or when things happen, like waarschijnlijk (probably) and laat (late), have to come before that final verb.
