Questions & Answers about Op zondag ruimen wij de zaal op.

Why isn't zondag capitalized?
Unlike in English, days of the week in Dutch like zondag are written with a lowercase letter. As you are learning in this lesson, you use the preposition op with days, just like "on" in English. The Op at the beginning of this sentence is only capitalized because it is the first word.
Why are there two ops in this sentence?
The first Op is the preposition "on" for the day of the week. The second op at the very end belongs to the verb! The full verb is opruimen, which means to clean up or tidy up. It is a separable verb, meaning the prefix op splits off and jumps to the very end of the sentence.
Why does the verb come before the subject (ruimen wij instead of wij ruimen)?
This is because of the Dutch "V2" rule. The main verb must be the second piece of information in the sentence. Since the time phrase Op zondag takes up the first position, the subject wij and verb ruimen have to swap places to keep the verb in position number two. This is called inversion.
What kind of "hall" is de zaal?
De zaal usually refers to a large room, an event hall, or a sports hall. If you want to talk about a hallway or corridor inside a normal house, you would use the word de gang instead.
