Questions & Answers about Werk je vandaag?
Why is it werk je without a -t at the end of the verb?
Usually, the "you" form gets a -t (like in je werkt). However, there is a special spelling rule in Dutch: when je or jij comes after the verb, you drop the -t. So, it becomes werk je.
Why does the verb werk come at the beginning of the sentence?
To make a simple yes/no question in Dutch, you swap the subject (je) and the verb (werk). This puts the verb in the very first position.
Where are the words for "are" and "working" in the Dutch sentence?
Dutch does not use a separate "to be" verb plus an "-ing" word like English does. The single present tense verb werk translates to both "work" and "are working".
Can I say werk jij vandaag? instead of werk je vandaag?
Yes, you can! Jij is the emphasized version of je. You would use jij if you wanted to stress who you are asking. The rule about dropping the -t applies to both je and jij.
