Questions & Answers about Beneden is de keuken.
Why is the word order is de keuken instead of de keuken is?
In Dutch, the verb must always be in the second position in a main sentence. Because this sentence starts with the location Beneden (Downstairs) to draw attention to it, the verb is must take the second spot. This forces the subject de keuken (the kitchen) to move after the verb. This swapping of the subject and verb is called inversion.
How would this sentence look if I wanted to start with "The kitchen"?
If you start with the subject, the sentence becomes De keuken is beneden. The verb is still stays in the second position, but because the subject is now first, you don't need inversion. Both versions are correct, but starting with Beneden puts more focus on the location.
Can I use beneden if I want to say I am walking downstairs?
Not exactly. Beneden is used to describe where something currently is (a static location), like the kitchen in this sentence. If you want to talk about movement or going downstairs, you have to use naar beneden (literally "to below"). For example: Ik ga naar beneden (I am going downstairs).
Why is it de keuken and not het keuken?
