Het hotel heeft negentig bedden en honderd stoelen.

Questions & Answers about Het hotel heeft negentig bedden en honderd stoelen.

How do you form tens like negentig?
Just like in English where you add "-ty" to the number, in Dutch you usually add -tig to the base number. So negen (nine) becomes negentig (ninety). Watch out not to confuse it with the ending -tien (-teen), which gives you negentien (nineteen).
The English translation says "one hundred", but the Dutch sentence just says honderd. Where is the "one"?
In Dutch, you don't use the word for "one" (een) before exactly one hundred or one thousand. You just say honderd or duizend. You only put a number in front when there are two or more, like tweehonderd (two hundred).
Why does bedden (beds) have a double 'd' when the singular is just bed?
This is because of a common Dutch spelling rule. The singular bed has a short 'e' sound. When you add the plural ending -en, you have to double the consonant 'd' to lock in that short vowel sound. If it were spelled "beden", it would be pronounced with a long 'e'.
Since hotel is the exact same word in English, is there any trick to knowing if it uses de or het?
Unfortunately, no! Loanwords and cognates (words that are shared between languages) still have a specific grammatical gender in Dutch. You just have to memorize that it is het hotel.
