Questions & Answers about Ik vergeet het antwoord niet.
Why is niet at the very end of the sentence?
In Dutch, when you negate the whole sentence (meaning you negate the verb vergeet), niet often goes at the end. Because there is a specific object here (het antwoord), niet must come after it, not right next to the verb like in English.
Why do we use niet instead of geen in this sentence?
We only use geen to negate nouns that have no article or use een ('a' or 'an'). Since we are talking about a specific answer with the definite article het ('the'), we must use niet to negate the action.
The English translation says 'am not forgetting'. Is there a Dutch equivalent for 'am ...ing'?
Dutch does have ways to say you are currently doing something, but it is much more common to just use the simple present tense. So vergeet translates to both 'forget' and 'am forgetting'.
Why is it het antwoord and not de antwoord?
Nouns in Dutch belong to one of two grammar categories: common (de words) and neuter (het words). Antwoord is a neuter noun, so it uses het for 'the'. You have to memorize this with each new noun you learn!
