Why does the full verb zitten have two ts, but Ik zit only has one?
This is because of the closed syllable spelling rule! The i in zit is a short vowel. If we added -en to make the full verb without doubling the t, we would get zi-ten. That leaves the i at the end of a syllable (an open syllable), making it a long sound. To keep the short i sound, we double the consonant to close the syllable: zit-ten. However, Dutch words never end in a double consonant, so Ik zit drops the extra t.
Why does this translate to 'I am sitting' and not 'I sit'?
Dutch does not have an exact equivalent to the English continuous tense (the -ing verbs). The simple present tense Ik zit means both 'I sit' and 'I am sitting'. You simply rely on the context to know which one makes the most sense.
In English I might say I am sitting 'in' a chair. Why does Dutch use op?
