Learn Dutch: Is de auto ook groot? - Is the car also big?

In Dutch, every noun is either a de-word or a het-word. Auto is a de-word. While there are a few patterns, for most everyday words like this, you just have to memorize the gender. It is highly recommended to learn new nouns together with their article, so always practice it as de auto!

Why is the verb Is at the beginning of the sentence?

Because this is a yes/no question. Just like in English, you swap the subject and the verb to ask a question. The statement De auto is groot (The car is big) becomes the question Is de auto groot? (Is the car big?).

Where does ook (also/too) belong in a sentence like this?

In a simple question, short adverbs like ook generally go right after the subject (de auto). Unlike English, where we often put "too" at the very end (Is the car big too?), Dutch keeps it closer to the verb and subject.

Why doesn't groot get an extra -e at the end here?

Adjectives only get an -e ending when they are placed directly in front of the noun they describe (like de grote auto). Because groot comes after the noun and the verb is, it stays in its basic dictionary form without an ending.
