Functioning in a role (als)
In English, the word "as" is incredibly versatile. In Dutch, its uses are split up depending on whether you are talking about a real role or making a comparison.
When someone is actually functioning in a specific capacity, job, or role, use als. This means the person genuinely holds that position or serves that real purpose.
| Before the boss leaves, he functions as an advisor. | Voordat de baas vertrekt, fungeert hij als adviseur. |
| She does not work as an interpreter anymore. | Zij werkt niet meer als tolk. |
| We consider the coach an impartial mediator. | Wij beschouwen de coach als een onpartijdige bemiddelaar. |
Making comparisons (zoals)
When you want to express similarity or say that someone acts like or in the manner of a noun, use zoals. This implies they are not necessarily that thing, but they are currently behaving like it.
| That boy plays like a real amateur. | Die jongen speelt zoals een echte amateur. |
| The role model helps them exactly like a professional. | Het rolmodel helpt hen precies zoals een professional. |
| The manager does not want you to decide like a dictator. | De manager wil niet dat jij beslist zoals een dictator. |
Als versus zoals
To master the difference, just remember: use als for the reality of the role, and zoals for a comparison. You will often see them contrasted in the same sentence to emphasize the difference between what someone's actual job is and how they are behaving.
