Designing your space
When evaluating an interior design layout, you might find a space too cramped (krap) or just right.
| The layout of the room is very cramped. | De indeling van de kamer is erg krap. |
When describing if a space or a piece of furniture is suitable, you will often use the word genoeg (enough).
"Genoeg" after adjectives
When genoeg modifies an adjective (like "large" or "cozy"), it must always be placed after the adjective. This follows the exact same pattern as English ("large enough").
| This room is large enough for the couch. | Deze kamer is groot genoeg voor de bank. |
| The new rug is not wide enough for the room. | Het nieuwe tapijt is niet breed genoeg voor de kamer. |
| The atmosphere in the living room is not cozy enough. | De sfeer in de woonkamer is niet knus genoeg. |
"Genoeg" before nouns
When genoeg modifies a noun to indicate a quantity ("enough color", "enough money"), it usually goes before the noun. This also mirrors standard English word order.
| I saw that the interior did not have enough color. | Ik zag dat het interieur niet genoeg kleur had. |
| We are going to furnish the house, but we do not have enough money. | Wij gaan het huis inrichten, maar we hebben niet genoeg geld. |
While you may occasionally see genoeg placed after a noun in Dutch, keeping it directly before the noun is the standard, natural rule for everyday conversation.
| Why is there not enough light in the seating area? | Waarom is er niet genoeg licht in de zithoek? |
