Conditional coordinating adverbs (anders)

Expressing Consequences with "anders"

When managing your finances, you often need to state the consequences of failing to meet a requirement or deadline. Just as we use "otherwise" in English, you can use the adverb anders in Dutch to link a condition with its consequence.

Because anders is an adverb, placing it at the beginning of the second clause triggers word order inversion. This means the finite verb must come immediately after anders, followed directly by the subject.

Transfer the money in time, otherwise you will get a fine.
Maak het geld tijdig over, anders krijg je een boete.
You must have a sufficient balance, otherwise we cannot debit.
U moet voldoende saldo hebben, anders kunnen we niet afschrijven.

Dealing with Late Payments

This structure is highly useful when discussing invoices, overdue payments, and the steps a company might take if an account is in arrears. Notice how the verb-subject inversion happens seamlessly after anders in every case.

Pay the invoice in time, otherwise we will send a reminder.
Betaal de factuur tijdig, anders sturen we een aanmaning.
You must pay, otherwise we will cancel your subscription.
Je moet betalen, anders zetten we je abonnement stop.

Escalating the Situation

If a payment is continually missed, the situation can become more serious. You can use anders alongside other conjunctions like dus (so) to build longer, more complex warnings about what needs to happen to avoid actions from a collection agency (het incassobureau) or a creditor (de schuldeiser).

The due date has passed, so pay now, otherwise they will send the collection agency.
De vervaldatum is verstreken, dus betaal nu, anders sturen ze het incassobureau.
The creditor demands sixty-five euros, otherwise he will block your account.
De schuldeiser eist vijfenzestig euro, anders blokkeert hij jouw account.
I think that we have to pay, otherwise the creditor will increase the outstanding amount.
Ik denk dat wij moeten betalen, anders verhoogt de schuldeiser het openstaande bedrag.
