Why is the word for "is not" nije instead of ne je?
In Croatian, the negative word ne normally goes right in front of the verb (like ne radim for "I don't work"). But the verb to be (biti) is a major exception. The negative forms merge into a single word. Instead of saying "ne je", you must use the special combined form nije.
