The Negative Forms of "To Be"
To say "am not", "are not", or "is not" in Croatian, combine the negative prefix ni- with the short forms of the verb "to be".
| Pronoun | Negative Form | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| ja | nisam | I am not |
| ti | nisi | you are not (singular) |
| on / ona / ono | nije | he / she / it is not |
| mi | nismo | we are not |
| vi | niste | you are not (plural/formal) |

These negative forms can stand alone as the main verb of a sentence:

| They are not together now. | Oni sada nisu zajedno. |
Describing Locations
Use these negative forms to state where someone or something is not located:
- daleko (far)
- blizu (near)
- unutra (inside)
- vani (outside)
| You are not far. | Nisi daleko. |
| This restaurant is not near. | Ovaj restoran nije blizu. |
| The cat is not outside. | Mačka nije vani. |
Asking Why and Giving Reasons
Use zašto (why) to ask for a reason and jer (because) to provide one:
| Why are you not inside? | Zašto niste unutra? |
| I am not outside because I am not ready. | Nisam vani jer nisam spreman. |
Using "Yet"
Još means "yet" or "still". Place it before the negative verb to express "not yet":
