Questions & Answers about Nisi daleko.
How does one word, nisi, mean "you are not"?
In Croatian, the negative word ne combines with the verb to be to make a single word. The positive form is si (you are). When you make it negative, it fuses together to become nisi (you are not).
Where is the word for "you" in this sentence?
The word for you is ti, but it is usually dropped in Croatian. The verb nisi already tells us exactly who the sentence is about (a singular, informal you). You only need to add ti at the start if you want to emphasize who you are talking about.
If I am talking to a woman, does the ending of daleko change?
No. The word daleko (far) acts as an adverb here to describe a location. Adverbs do not change their endings based on gender, so it stays daleko whether you are talking to a man or a woman.
Can I say this to a stranger who is asking me for directions?
It is better not to. Nisi is the informal form, used with friends or family. If you are talking to a stranger or an older person, you should use the formal version: Niste daleko.
