Questions & Answers about Možda će padati kiša. U tom slučaju ostat ćemo kod kuće.
Why doesn't the first sentence use a word for "it", like "Ono će padati kiša"?
In English, we use "it" as a dummy subject for weather ("It is raining"). In Croatian, the weather phenomenon itself is usually the subject. Here, kiša (rain) is the grammatical subject, so the sentence literally translates to "Maybe rain will fall."
Why is će placed right after Možda instead of next to the main verb?
će is an enclitic (a "weak" word without its own accent) and must take the second position in the clause. Because Možda occupies the first position, će must immediately follow it, even though it separates from the main verb padati.
Why is it spelled ostat ćemo instead of ostati ćemo?
When a verb's infinitive ends in -ti and comes directly before the future tense helper (ću, ćeš, će, ćemo, etc.), standard Croatian drops the final i in both spelling and pronunciation. If you flip the word order, the i returns: mi ćemo ostati.
Could I say u kući instead of kod kuće?
You could, but the focus changes. u kući emphasizes being physically "inside the house" (as opposed to being out in the yard). kod kuće is the standard set phrase for being "at home", focusing on the concept of your residence rather than the physical building.
