Questions & Answers about Paprat izgleda kao da je iz prošlosti.
Is paprat a masculine or feminine noun, given that it ends in a consonant?
It is a feminine noun. Specifically, it belongs to the group of feminine nouns that end in a consonant (the i-declension), just like noć (night) or riječ (word).
English often uses a past or subjunctive verb for unreal comparisons, like 'as if it came from the past.' Why does Croatian use the present tense je here?
In Croatian, when you use kao da (as if) to describe a current impression or appearance, you simply use the present tense. You don't need to shift to a past or conditional tense just because the comparison is imaginary.
Why is the enclitic je placed immediately after kao da?
The phrase kao da acts as a single conjunction block that introduces the second clause. Following the strict second-position rule for enclitics, the verb je tucks in right after this opening conjunction.
The preposition iz requires the genitive case. Why does the genitive form of prošlost end in -i instead of the typical masculine/neuter -a or feminine -e?
Prošlost (past) is another feminine noun ending in a consonant, exactly like paprat. For this specific class of nouns, the genitive singular ending is always -i, resulting in iz prošlosti.
