Questions & Answers about Ona se skriva pod stolom i zapisuje tajne.
How is zapisuje formed, and why use it instead of zapisati?
Zapisuje comes from the imperfective verb zapisivati. Following this lesson's pattern, it is built from the prefixed perfective verb zapisati (to write down / note) by adding the suffix -ivati to make it an ongoing or repeated action. We need the imperfective here because she is currently in the process of writing down the secrets.
Why does zapisivati turn into zapisuje in the present tense instead of something like "zapisiva"?
Verbs that are formed with the suffix -ivati (as well as -ovati and -evati) usually change that suffix to -uj- in the present tense. To conjugate it, you drop the -ivati, add -uj-, and then attach the normal present tense ending -e for the "she" form, resulting in zapisuje.
Is skriva se another example of an imperfective verb formed with a suffix?
Yes! It comes from the perfective verb skriti se or sakriti se (to hide oneself). By adding the -va- suffix, we get the imperfective skrivati se (to be hiding oneself). Unlike verbs ending in -ivati, verbs ending in -avati or -vati often keep their v in the present tense, which gives us the present tense form skriva.
Why is "under the table" translated as pod stolom using the instrumental case?
The preposition pod (under) triggers the instrumental case when describing a static location—answering the question "where is she at?". If she were actively moving from outside to underneath the table (destination, answering "where to?"), pod would take the accusative case instead, making it pod stol.
