Questions & Answers about Programirat ću novu verziju da riješim problem.
Why do we use da riješim instead of just the infinitive to mean "to solve"?
In English, we use the infinitive ("to solve") to show purpose. In Croatian, purpose is usually expressed using da followed by the present tense. Literally, this sentence says "I will program a new version that I solve the problem."
Why is the verb riješiti (to solve) used in its perfective form riješim here rather than the imperfective rješavam?
When expressing the purpose of an action, you typically want to focus on the completed result. You are programming a new version to successfully finish solving the problem, so the perfective aspect is the natural choice.
Why is the final "i" missing from programirati in programirat ću?
In the Croatian future tense, when the infinitive verb ends in -ti and comes directly before the helping verb (ću), the final -i is dropped. If you included a pronoun and flipped the order, the -i would stay: ja ću programirati.
Why does the ending of nova verzija change to novu verziju?
It changes because it is the direct object of the sentence (the thing being programmed). Feminine nouns ending in -a change their ending to -u in the accusative case, and their adjectives must match.
Why doesn't the word problem change its ending if it is the direct object of riješim?
problem is a masculine noun. For masculine nouns that represent inanimate objects (things that are not alive), the accusative case looks exactly the same as the dictionary (nominative) form.
