Expressing Purpose with "da"
In English, we typically express the purpose of an action using an infinitive ("I am updating the server to optimize the database"). In Croatian, you express purpose using the conjunction da (in order to / so that) followed by a verb in the present tense.
| I will program a new version to solve the problem. | Programirat ću novu verziju da riješim problem. |
| We update the server to optimize the database. | Ažuriramo server da optimiziramo bazu. |
Same Subject vs. Different Subject
This da + present tense structure is incredibly versatile. It works exactly the same way whether the person performing the action is also the one experiencing the result, or if you are doing something so that someone or something else can do something.
| I am only optimizing the system so that it works fast. | Samo optimiziram sustav da radi brzo. |
When the subject changes, English switches to using "so that," but Croatian relies on the exact same da construction.
| I will arrange the interface so that the user sees the data. | Uredit ću sučelje da korisnik vidi podatke. |
| Because of the error, we test every function so that the system works. | Zbog pogreške testiramo svaku funkciju da sustav radi. |
Tech and Software Vocabulary
When discussing software development, you will notice that many Croatian tech verbs are loan words adapted with the suffix -irati.
| to program | programirati |
| to optimize | optimizirati |
You can combine these industry terms with the da purpose structure to explain complex processes, system architecture, and user outcomes clearly.
| We have to connect the application and the server so that the user gets the data. | Moramo spojiti aplikaciju i server da korisnik dobije podatke. |
| Here we are programming a new function so that the user is satisfied. | Ovdje programiramo novu funkciju da korisnik bude zadovoljan. |
