Question 1

Why does ormar look like it hasn't changed its ending after the preposition za?

Accepted Answer

ormar is actually in the accusative case here! Because it is a masculine inanimate noun (a non-living thing), its accusative form is identical to its nominative dictionary form. We know it must be accusative because the verb gurnula (pushed) involves motion toward a destination.

Question 2

What would it mean if we used the instrumental case (za ormarom) instead?

Accepted Answer

Using the instrumental case focuses on location rather than motion to a new destination. If you said Gurnula sam je za ormarom, it would mean the action happened entirely behind the wardrobe (i.e., you were both already standing behind the wardrobe when you pushed her).

Question 3

Could je mean 'it' instead of 'her' in this sentence?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The word je is the accusative form of ona (she). Because Croatian assigns genders to all nouns, je is also used to replace any feminine inanimate object. For example, if you were talking about a stolica (chair), this sentence would perfectly translate to 'I pushed it behind the wardrobe'.

Question 4

Why do the words sam and je come right after the first word?

Accepted Answer

Both sam and je are enclitics (unstressed words) that must sit in the second position of a Croatian sentence. They cluster together right after the first word (gurnula). In these clusters, the verb auxiliary (sam) always comes before the object pronoun (je).

Question 5

How do we know the speaker is female?

Accepted Answer

The verb gurnula ends in -la, which is the feminine form of the past tense participle. Combined with the auxiliary verb sam (I am), it shows that a woman is saying 'I pushed'.
