Questions & Answers about Znaš li čija je to zasluga?
Why do we use the feminine form čija here?
The word čiji (whose) acts like an adjective, meaning it has to match the gender, number, and case of the noun it refers to. Here, it refers to zasluga (merit), which is a feminine singular noun in the nominative case. Therefore, čiji becomes čija.
If zasluga is feminine, why is the pronoun to neuter?
In this sentence, to doesn't directly describe zasluga. Instead, it acts as a general pointer meaning 'that thing' or 'that situation' (Do you know whose merit that is?). When pointing to an abstract concept or a general situation rather than a specific noun, Croatian uses the default neuter pronoun to.
Could I say Da li znaš instead of Znaš li?
Yes, Da li znaš is very common in everyday speech. However, inverting the verb and adding the particle li (Znaš li) is the standard, slightly more formal way to ask a yes/no question in Croatian.
Can zasluga also mean 'credit' in a financial sense?
No, zasluga strictly means 'merit' or 'credit' in the sense of being responsible for an achievement (like saying 'She deserves the credit for this success'). For financial credit or a bank loan, you must use the word kredit.
